A lot of weight issues are not actually dietary problems at all but rather emotional ones.  From early in our childhoods we are rewarded or bribed with food in return for good behaviour. -  "Be a good girl now and I'll get you sweets."  A crying child with a scratch or a cut knee will often be offered food as a consolation. "A biscuit will make that all better" Young children are conditioned into viewing food not as fuel for the body but as a substitute for dealing with emotions in an more appropriate way. 

Well meaning parents train their children to eat all of their meals regardless of their appetites at the time. How often have you heard (or said)? "Finish your dinner, there are people starving in Africa."  Like eating more than we need can compensate for the fact of another's hunger?

And then there is the evolutionary problem!

In our not so distant past, we human beings faced a daily struggle to find food in adequate amounts. The availability of food was never certain and so we evolved to eat as much as we could when it was available to make up for in times of scarcity.  Our bodies are also designed in this way, - to store fat reserves when calorie intake decreases.
